Title : Relationship between root biomass and soil organic matter pools in the shortgrass steppe of eastern Colorado
Journal : Ecosystems
Comment : If temperature is the primary control over decomposition with depth, kPOM should be greatest at the soil surface. However, SGS soils frequently experience water deficits in the upper soil profile due to evaporation and transpiration (Sala and others 1992). Their results suggest that the influence of water availability on soil biota may be the most important factor limiting decomposition rates.
